BMW What's New for 2010?

Courtesy of Edmunds Inside Line

2010 BMW 1 Series: The only exterior change to the 1 Series for 2010 is a new exterior color: Deep Sea Blue Metallic replaces Monaco Blue Metallic. Changes inside are just as exciting. A moonroof becomes available on the 128i coupe as a stand-alone or as part of the Premium package, BMW Professional radio with HD Radio becomes standard and the HiFi sound system remains available with the selection of Premium Sound with Logic7 sound system. Automatic high beams will also be available for the first time. They are a stand-alone option.

2010 BMW 3 Series: On the 2010 3 Series sedan and coupe, a moonroof becomes optional on 328i/328i xDrive models as a stand-alone upgrade or as part of the Premium package. As on the 1 Series coupe and convertible, BMW Professional radio with HD Radio becomes standard on the 3 Series sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon. The HiFi sound system remains available with the selection of Premium Sound with Logic7 sound system. Automatic high beams will also be available for the first time. They are a stand-alone option now on all four body styles. Exterior changes are limited to a new standard wheel style on the 328i/328i xDrive models and on the wagon.

2010 BMW 5 Series: The BMW 5 Series sedan and wagon remain unchanged for 2010, but there is a new model; the 5 Series Gran Turismo, which was first shown at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show in September and will hit the market by the end of the year. Essentially a hatchback version of the 5 Series sedan, the Gran Turismo shares its longer 120.7-inch wheelbase with BMW's flagship, the 750i sedan. It also uses aluminum doors to save weight, and it's the first four-door BMW to have frameless door windows. Available only as the 550i, the rear-wheel-drive 5 Series Gran Turismo is for now only available with a 400-horsepower twin-turbo V8 and BMW's first eight-speed automatic transmission. It's the same engine BMW uses in the 7 Series sedan and X6 SUV. In the spring of 2010, BMW will offer the 535i GT with a 300-hp twin-turbo inline six-cylinder, as well as xDrive all-wheel-drive versions of both models. In standard form, the Gran Turismo seats five, but its unique 40-20-40-split rear seat allows for several fold-down options for people and things. In addition, the entire seat cushion can be adjusted 3.9 inches fore and aft and the individual backrest sections adjust as well. If you just want a four-seater, order the optional Luxury Rear Seating package. It adds power rear bucket seats, a rear center console with cupholders and a storage compartment and a power fold-down function. Cargo capacity ranges from 15.5 cubic feet in the sedan-style enclosed trunk to fully 60 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

2010 BMW 6 Series: No changes.

2010 BMW 7 Series: New models include the all-wheel-drive 750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive, the V12-powered 760Li and the ActiveHybrid 7, which is, you guessed it, a hybrid version of BMW's flagship sedan. Under the hood of the top-of-the-line 760Li is an all-new turbocharged V12 engine making 535 hp. Standard equipment includes Sirius Satellite Radio, rear and sideview cameras, Comfort Access, soft-close doors, automatic high beams, lane departure warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, a six-disc DVD changer, a premium sound system, USB/iPod adapter, Active Roll Stabilization, Integral Active Steering, head-up display and a sport steering wheel. The ActiveHybrid 7 sedan will be marketed in the U.S., beginning next spring, in standard and long-wheelbase variants. It'll look like every other 7 Series with the exception of its unique badging. It's powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 rated at 440 hp and 475 pound-feet of torque, mated to a single synchronous electric motor and providing a combined output of 465 hp and 516 lb-ft. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, and energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery pack. BMW says 0-60-mph acceleration takes 4.8 seconds, with a 15 percent improvement in average fuel economy. The ActiveHybrid 7 also will feature an automatic stop-start system to help reduce fuel consumption. Top speed is electronically limited to 150 mph. The Sport package will be replaced by a new M Sport package. It includes an M steering wheel, aerodynamic package, Active Roll Stabilization (on RWD models only), Shadowline trim, anthracite headliner and 19-inch wheels with performance tires. The optional 20-inch wheels with performance tires are sure to be a popular option and we expect a few takers on the Carbon Black Metallic exterior paint, which is available with the new M Sport package. Integral Active Steering (previously part of the Sport package) becomes a stand-alone option and is offered only for rear-wheel-drive models. Active front seats have been added to the Luxury Seating package and rear massaging seats are now included in the Luxury Rear Seating package (available on -Li models only). BMW Individual trims will be able to be ordered outside of the BMW Individual Composition (whole-vehicle) package.

2010 BMW M3: Automatic high beams will be available for the first time (stand-alone option). HD Radio becomes standard.

2010 BMW M5: No changes.

2010 BMW M6: No changes.

2010 BMW x3: A moonroof becomes optional as a stand-alone option or as part of the Premium package. HD Radio becomes standard.

2010 BMW x5: This year BMW's largest vehicle, the X5, gets the fourth-generation iDrive controller and updated optional navigation system, including a high-resolution 8.8-inch display and 80GB media server. Also, a new $2,200 Sport Activity package replaces the Sport package. Contents are the same as the 2009 Sport package with the exception of Adaptive Drive, which is now broken out as a stand-alone option for $3,500. Saddle Brown Leather will replace Gray Nevada Leather. HD Radio will become standard. The rearview camera in the Technology package will now include a top-view feature, and the Technology package will cost $2,800. Automatic high beams will also be available as a stand-alone option for $250, and roof rails become a stand-alone option for $100.

2010 BMW X5M: With 555 hp from its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, the new X5 M is the most powerful SUV in the world. It's also the first SUV to be worthy of M status. Beyond its massively powerful engine, the X5 M gets 20-inch wheels and tires, an M-tuned suspension plus standard Adaptive Drive, ginormous four-wheel disc brakes, BMW's Servotronic (vehicle-speed-sensitive) power steering and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system so smoky burnouts aren't on the menu. But a launch control function is, so 0-60-mph runs can rip your face off. The only transmission offered is a six-speed automatic that BMW says shifts faster than any BMW automatic ever. As in other M models, Merino leather is standard, appearing on the seats with M-specific stitching, doors including armrests and pulls, front head restraints with embossed M logo, and center console. Still, there are two upholstery options: Full Merino, which adds leather to the upper dash, the front backrests' rear sides and their storage pockets; leather upper and lower door panels; and two additional color choices. In combination with the Active Ventilated Seats package, the seating upholstery is perforated and the leather treatment is full. Also, M sport front seats are standard, as is a fold-down rear center armrest.

2010 BMW X6: The big news for the X6 is the new hybrid model called the ActiveHybrid X6. It bundles a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, rated at 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, with two synchronous electric motors, rated at 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively. Maximum combined output is 480 hp and peak torque is 575 lb-ft — figures which BMW says make the ActiveHybrid X6 "the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world." The ActiveHybrid X6 is fitted with a seven-speed automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. According to BMW, the vehicle can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 130 mph. BMW claims a 20 percent improvement in average fuel economy, and says the vehicle can run on pure electric power up to 37 mph. Energy is stored in a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Like the 2010 X5, a mutation of its fastback sister also gets BMW's fourth-generation iDrive controller and updated optional navigation system including a high-resolution 8.8-inch screen and 80GB media server. A power tailgate will also become standard (it was previously part of the Premium package) and automatic high beams will be available as a stand-alone option. For $1,500, a performance upgrade is available on both X6 engine variants. On the X6 xDrive35i the engine performance increases by 20 hp to 320 hp. BMW says 0-60-mph acceleration is improved by 0.2 to 6.3 seconds. On the V8-powered X6 xDrive50i, the engine performance increases by 40 hp to 440 hp. BMW claims that 0-60-mph time is improved by 0.2 to 5.1 seconds. The performance upgrade is only available with the optional Sport package. HD Radio will become standard and the X6's rearview camera will now include a top-view feature. There's also a new package called the Sport Activity package. It costs $1,900 on the X6 xDrive35i and $1,400 on the X6 xDrive50i. The contents are the same as the Sport package, except for 2VA Adaptive Drive that is available as a stand-alone option for $3,500.

2010 BMW X6M: Here we could just write "See 2010 BMW X5 M," as the two hot-rod SUVs are identical except for their silhouettes. Like the X5 M, the X6 M is powered by a 555-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 backed by a specially tuned six-speed that is BMW's fastest-shifting automatic transmission ever. Beyond its massively powerful engine, the X6 M gets 20-inch wheels and tires, an M-tuned suspension plus standard Adaptive Drive, ginormous four-wheel disc brakes, BMW's Servotronic (vehicle-speed-sensitive) power steering and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system so smoky burnouts aren't on the menu. But a launch control function is, so 0-60-mph runs can rip your face off. As in other M models, Merino leather is standard, appearing on the seats with M-specific stitching, doors including armrests and pulls, front head restraints with embossed M logo, and center console. Still, there are two upholstery options: Full Merino, which adds leather to the upper dash; the front backrests' rear sides and their storage pockets; leather upper and lower door panels; and two additional color choices. In combination with the Active Ventilated Seats package, the seating upholstery is perforated and the leather treatment is full. Also, M-sport front seats are standard, as is a fold-down rear center armrest.
